Photocopy of a diary begun by Coates, a 24-year-old farmer from Mt. Pleasant, Green County, Wis. at the time of his enlistment in the 5th Battery of the Wisconsin Light Artillery, August, 1864. The diary mainly describes the company's movements through Georgia, Alabama, and the Carolinas, with occasional references to events such as illnesses, accidents, promotions within the company, rumors circulating through camp, and review of the troops by the President. Also included is a typed chronology of his tour of duty.
